Colorado: The Hexahectaenneacontakaiheptagonal State – 17 February 2021

I recently purchased a large wall map of Colorado made by National Geographic and one of the things that struck me upon inspection was the fact that Colorado is not nearly as rectangular as I had always believed. So I typed, “Colorado is not a square,” into Google and lo and behold, the state has 697 distinct “sides” making it technically a Hexahectaenneacontakaiheptagon.

I imagine that the term hexahectaenneacontakaiheptagon would not even exist if not for Colorado having that many sides. I mean, it would technically have the potential to exist because of naming conventions in geometry, but it’s not as if people are just going to have to casually describe shapes with 697 sides. I suppose if one were to buy a patch of land they could discover their land has that many sides and then figure out the appropriate geometric term for the shape of their land, but several pages into the google search for hexahectaenneacontakaiheptagon does not yield any results other than pages discussing the fact that Colorado is a hexahectaenneacontakaiheptagon.

There’s a little more about Colorado’s shape here and I don’t feel much like discussing it. I do plan, however, to explore as much of Colorado as I can while I live here, which will be at least until my lease ends in November. Though I suspect I will remain after that because I don’t see much reason to move at this point.
